Our Head PGA Professional, Sven Nielsen, has been with us since the start to help establish Trump International Golf Club, Dubai. Sven grew up in South Africa and started playing golf at the age of 2, before joining his first golf club at the age of 6. Sven represented his County, Province and National teams at variance age divisions. After a successful amateur career, Sven joined the team at Trump Turnberry in 2007, where he turned Professional in 2008, spending the next nine and a half years at this prestigious resort. Sven stated that “ Trump Turnberry is certainly one of the best places in the world to work at, from helping host The Open Championship for ladies, seniors and The Open, to learning my trade at one of the best Golf Academies in Europe’’.
1 - When did you start playing golf and why?
I started playing at the age of 2. I guess I was taught to walk at the same time as learning to swing the club. After that I joined my first golf club at the age of 6, where I played 9 holes with my dad on a Sunday afternoon and 1 day during the week. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of getting better, knowing if I work hard at it, I will improve. But knowing what I know now, I would definitely practice a lot different.
2 - Dream 4-Ball?
Tiger and Nicklaus – Just so I can ask them, who is the best ever?
Hendrik Stenson – one of the nicest guys I’ve met (and also one of the best ball strikers ever) with a great sense of humour!
3 - Favourite club in the bag?
It use to be my 2 iron in Scotland..as you can imagine, I needed it a lot in Scotland with the severe wind you get there. But being in Dubai now, I would have to say my putter. It certainly is the one club that I can count on when I play.
4 - What's your favourite hole on Trump Dubai and why?
I really enjoy the challenge of the Par 5 2nd. You need to hit a few good shots in a row, the 2nd shot is to a very narrow area, and your 3rd shot has water in front of the green. So definitely a Par 5 where par is a great score every time you play it.
5 - Favourite golfer on tour and why?
With the excitement of him making his return at the end of the year, Ive always been a big Tiger fan. He revolutionised the game, and all the players on tour know how he has single handedly made the game of golf more popular. I guess what I really admired, was his desire to always be the best, always improve and how he kept winning week after week.
6 - Final question, and most importantly, what's your favourite dish in The Ninth Sports Cafe?
I have to with one healthy option and then one where I treat myself on the day..
The healthy option is the Chicken Ceasar Salad, and on a treat day, I go with the Steak and Brie baguette.
